Scientists have recently found that man's best friend may in fact be so because dogs can read human emotions.  If true, this would make the dog the only known animal to have the capability to read human emotion.  It has always seemed odd to me, as a dog owner, that my dog seemed able to read me and those around me.  I never needed to speak, gesture, or really do anything other than walk in the door from a bad day and any dog that I've had seemed to know immediately how I felt.  The recent study shows that dogs have what is called a left gaze bias, something humans also have.  It seems that the right side of a person's face is more likely to show emotion, or at least show it more clearly.  The dog gazes with its left more than right, meaning it is looking at the right side of the face.  Scientists speculate that this trait developed over the time that dogs and man have been intermingling and that the right side of the dogs brain(the part that does the processing for the left eye) is more capable of interpreting human emotion.
